Comparing education for sustainable development in initial teacher education across four countries

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to undertake a cross-comparative inquiry into Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) related governance, initiatives and practices in initial teacher education (ITE) across four countries with very different contexts – Sweden, Scotland, Canada Australia. It provides insights issues arising internationally, implications ESD ITE offers learnings other contexts. Design/methodology/approach A study design overarching themes within-case descriptions was applied consider, compare contrast governance characteristics, from each context. Findings approaches that country adopts are unique yet similar, all have included some extent. Comparing contrasting has revealed focussed on relation regulation, leadership. Research limitations/implications Making comparisons between difficult uncertain often misses the richness nuances individual sites under study. However, it remains an important endeavour as challenges embedding will be better understood overcome if can learn one another. Originality/value Scrutinising valuable broadening views about possibilities understanding how policies translate practice.
